What's new in ReproofReproof

Focus switching is expensive. What seems like a little thing, moving your mouse over to click something, takes your fingers away from the keyboard and adds just a bit of friction to picking back up your writing. Reproof’s been designed from day one to be keyboard focused, where you can write in Markdown or Rich text, search through and open documents from the Command Palette, and create a new document, all without your hands leaving the keyboard.

There were still some spots when you’d need to use your mouse, though, such as opening another document in side-by-side mode, renaming a document, or moving it to a folder. Not anymore. With Quick Actions in the Command Palette, you can take action on documents right from your keyboard.

Press Cmd+k to open the Command Palette. Search for a document. Then when the document you’re looking for is selected, press the right arrow to scroll through the options you can take with that document.

And, as a bonus, you can also now switch which side-by-side document is in focus from your keyboard by pressing ctrl+Option+[ to put your cursor in the left document, or ctrl+Option+] to focus the right document.

Words come first, in Reproof. But words don't only come in paragraphs. Sometimes they come in bullet points, in blockquotes, and code blocks. And sometimes they need to be tabulated, sorted into columns and rows, organized by category and quantity.

For those times, you need tables. And you can now make those tables in Reproof, or copy and paste them in from any other app.

To add a table in Reproof, click the lists button in the top toolbar, hover over the Table item, then add the number of rows and columns you need. Or, you can start out with Markdown, typing out your first row with pipes like | this | and this | then Reproof will turn it into a table when you press return. Or you could copy a table from Excel, Google Sheets, or any other spreadsheet or table editor, and paste it into Reproof (as long as it has no more than 6 columns; any more gets hard to read in a document).

Then, edit to your heart's content, using Reproof's rich text and markdown formatting to tweak things as needed. Drag and drop columns and rows, mark the top row as a heading, copy and paste everything out into any other app.

It's the easiest way to add tables alongside everything else you're writing.

Reproof’s built for publishing. You can copy anything you write in rich text, markdown, or HTML anytime to paste into your email newsletter, blogging platform, social network profile, or anywhere else you publish online.

Sometimes, though, all you need is a quick way to share your writing. Maybe you want to privately share something for feedback. Or you might want to share something longer-form than would fit easily in a social media post. That, or you’d like to share your actual Reproof draft, complete with paragraph versions, to show how your ideas took shape.

Reproof’s new Reproof Publish feature is built for that. Open a document, open its right sidebar, click the Document tab, then publish your document on Reproof from the bottom of the sidebar. You can share privately with a password, publicly with a link, and either way choose to show or hide paragraph versions.

It’s the quickest way to go from idea to published piece, with Reproof.

“Murder your darlings,” advised Sir Arthur Quiller-Couch. “Kill your darlings, even when it breaks your egocentric little scribbler's heart,” said Stephen King, popularizing the idea. But sometimes you’ve got a bit that sounds pretty good, and you’d hate to erase it forever.

Clippings let you keep your darlings on the cutting floor, to resurrect later when you find a better place for them to live. Click the scissors icon beside a paragraph to clip it, or select text and press Cmd+Alt+X to clip it.

Then click the caret in the bottom of your document (or press Cmd+J) to open the Clippings pane, where you can drag clippings into any document, jot down a note or idea as a new clipping, and more.

It’s the easier way to cut bits from your writing without worrying about losing them forever.

Spellcheck happens as you type, as you’d expect, thanks to your operating system and browser. You write, mistype something obvious, and get notified to fix it right away.

Then come the harder-to-catch things. The broken capitalization on brand names. Clichés. TK’s you forgot to close out. Grammatical near-misses. Correctly spelled homophones that would be correct in another sentence but not here.

Reproof’s Proofread mode catches those and more. When you’re finished writing, tap Proofread or press Cmd+;. Moments later, you’ll get suggested edits for everything you should fix. Reproof won’t change your writing without your permission, and you can ignore any suggestions that aren’t a good fit. It’s just a handy proofreader to look over your shoulder and ensure your copy doesn’t have any glaring mistakes before you finish writing.
